The Enduring Legacy:
The Origin Story of Metropolis Drugs
In the heart of Metropolis, Illinois, nestled within a tight-knit community, lies a testament to family, service, and dedication: Metropolis Drugs I & II. For over five decades, this pharmacy has been more than just a place to fill prescriptions; it’s been a cornerstone of the community, a beacon of hope, and a symbol of unwavering commitment to those it serves.
The story begins in 1974 when Tim Lawson, a native of eastern Kentucky with a passion for helping others, embarked on a journey that would shape the lives of generations to come. With a degree in biology from the University of Kentucky and a determination to make a difference, Tim ventured into the field of pharmacy, eventually finding himself at Sanford University where he met his future wife, Leslie Jo Lawson.
Leslie, like Tim, came from a family deeply rooted in pharmacy. With both her and her sister, Ashley Thompson, being second-generation pharmacists, the path ahead seemed clear—a path paved with a commitment to serving their community with compassion and excellence.
In August 1993, the Lawsons took a leap of faith and acquired Metropolis Drugs II, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their journey. The decision wasn’t made lightly, but as fate would have it, on the first day of operation, Leslie filled a single prescription—a small sign, perhaps, but one that spoke volumes. It was a sign that they were meant to be there, serving the people of Metropolis.
Officially becoming owners in 1995, Tim and Leslie wasted no time in making their mark on the community. Through hard work, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to their values, Metropolis Drugs grew, both in scope and in reputation. But the journey was not without its challenges. Like any business, there were ups and downs, hurdles to overcome, and obstacles to navigate. Yet through it all, the Lawsons remained resolute, driven by their passion for helping others and their unwavering belief in the power of community.
So, what sets Metropolis Drugs apart from the rest? According to Tim Lawson, it’s all about customer service. From day one, the focus has always been on meeting the needs of the community and going above and beyond to ensure that every patient receives the care and attention they deserve. In addition to exemplary customer service, Metropolis Drugs distinguishes itself by being a Medicare Part B provider, constantly seeking out new ways to serve its patients and embracing technology to enhance the pharmacy experience.
But the story of Metropolis Drugs wouldn’t be complete without mentioning its partnership with IPC. For Tim and Leslie, IPC has been more than just a business arrangement—it’s been a lifeline. As a member-owned cooperative, IPC has provided invaluable support, resources, and networking opportunities, helping Metropolis Drugs stay connected, informed, and ahead of the curve.
Through IPC, Metropolis Drugs has access to a range of services, from vendor partnerships to The Warehouse and beyond. But perhaps most importantly, IPC has fostered a sense of community among independent pharmacy owners, allowing them to share insights, ideas, and best practices, ultimately strengthening the collective voice of independent pharmacies everywhere.
As Tim reflects on the journey thus far and looks to the future, he is filled with excitement and optimism. With IPC by their side, the possibilities are endless, and the Lawsons are eager to see where the road ahead will take them. From their humble beginnings in 1974 to the thriving community pharmacy they are today, Metropolis Drugs I & II stands as a testament to the power of family, service, and unwavering dedication—a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
